1996
- "David can be a really nice guy," Anderson declares, laughing.
"He’s got the ability to be absolutely compassionate and caring.
At the same time," she says, "he’s one of the moodiest people
I’ve ever met. But you forgive him because he’s so charming
and can be so sweet and funny." -- (TV Guide December 21-27,
1996)
- Did you and David have instant chemistry?
He came over to me in the hallway at the network audition and
asked if we could read through the scene together. We did, and
it was amazing. Better than anything that we've done since.
-- (Rolling Stone, May 1996)
- How do you assess David's appeal?
Obviously, the audience is only seeing his character, who's
incredibly intelligent, kind, charming, sensitive. He's like
the perfect romantic hero. And a lot of that is also David.
He brings such a warmth and intelligence to the role and a smooth
sexuality that I don't think anybody in their right mind could
not find him attractive. -- (Rolling Stone, May 1996)
- A few days after getting the part, Anderson flew to Vancouver
to start shooting. "David took me under his wing," Anderson
recalls. "[His reassurance] meant a lot to me, and still does,
because it was a very scary time." -- EW Gillian Anderson
(February 9, 1996)
1995
- Sounding very much like Scully describing Mulder, Anderson
admits, "We have our ups and downs. At times it's difficult.
We both tend to be quite moody, but underneath I think we care
about each other." They are both coy about whether they ever
considered dating, but Anderson will allow that Duchovny is
"like catnip" to women. -- EW X-Files Behind-the-scenes (March
10, 1995)
- "When we first started X-files," says Anderson, "I was so
green. It was only my second time in front of a camera. I desperately
needed someone to show me the ropes. And he did that. He was
wonderful." -- (TV Guide by Deborah Starr, March 1995)
Miscellaneous
- "What did you think of David Duchovny when you first met
to make the pilot episode?"
We hit it off straight away. We almost fell into a rhythm while
we were reading together and it felt really comfortable.
- "Has your relationship developed over the three years
that you have been making the show?"
The first two years on the show were so completely about coping
with this phenomenon that David and I didn’t nurture our relationship.
But now we seem to be putting more attention towards that.
- "We pretty much joke all the time. I mean, we need to stay
serious and to stay focused, but the subject matter that we're
dealing with is so heavy for the most part, that it's essential
for us to have some comic relief. Both David and I tend to be
very goofy and we take advantage of it, when we can and when
it's appropriate, and sometimes when it's not appropriate. But
we're not interested in aliens, not in the slightest. I don't
think I have ever heard a discussion on The X-Files set about
whether a crew member believes or does not believe in something
paranormal. That kind of information may be fascinating to people
in general, but not on our show it's fascinating only to Chris
Carter; and beyond that, it's just part of the news."
Q: With David Duchovny is it the case that you don t get
along?
A:Our relationship, it's true, is a little complicated. Let's
say that there are a lot of concessions we both have to make.
But overall, we do get along.
- Q: At the beginning, didn't you take umbrage that he was
more successful than you?
A: At the time, I was pregnant. I looked more like a housewife
than a sex-symbol. The media talked about David, about how sexy
he was. I wasn t jealous, but most of the attention was going
to David, although I was putting as much effort into my work
on set as he was.
- Q: What quality do you admire in you partner?
A: David has a great sense of humour. On set, he lightens things
up. And that s something I really appreciate.
- "We have a very complicated relationship that I don’t think
can be picked up by anyone who visits the set or imagines the
atmosphere on the set," says Anderson. "It’s one that has developed
changed and shifted and grown over five years, but it’s certainly
not one of discord or animosity or anything. I don’t even know
how to describe it. There’s a lot of care there, I think."
- "I have a feeling David and I will be much closer after the
series is done and we don't have to be with each other daily,"
Anderson observes. "We can come back together for a second feature
four or so years from now. As much as I will feel a huge weight
off my shoulders when the series is done, it's gonna be bittersweet.
I'm sure all those wonderful moments that David and I have shared
together will come to mind and I'll be reminiscing about it
for years."
- "Well, I'm sure I've walked into his trailer while he's changing,
thinking it was my trailer, of course, shocked him stark naked.
I think what his fans truly want to here is that...umm...he's
apparently, and I believe this is true, well hung. In terms
of his body, he's got, you know..." Anderson is all but squirming
by now. "I can't believe you put me on the spot here. He's in
good shape. Good shape."
- ~Anderson says, "I found it easy to treat Mckean like Mulder---
after all, I've been dealing with Mulder for five and a half
seasons. But the other way around? Treating David like McKean's
character? That was a challege. I have this intense history
with David. There's a lot of energy and chemistry between us:
and I had to work hard not fall into those patterns while I
was dealing with him as if I don't know him. IN the end i think
we pulled it off. But it was very tricky, very interesting."(from
Dreamland)
~"I enjoyed this epiode," Says Gillian,"I got a big kick out
of sitting next to David and doing all the little things to
pretend we were married. I also liked calling him 'Poopyhead'.
(Arcadia)
~Says Gillian: 'I was proud of David writing the script. I thought
it was wonderful. He was kind and gentle and respectful and
humble, and always tried to do his best."(UnNatural)
- "A lot of things shifted over the last couple of years,"
agrees Gillian Anderson, his X-Files costar. "He’s become gentler."
The actress hints that their own complicated relationship -
one the media have tended to promote as tortured - has eased
up: "Not many people are willing to see the middle ground,"
says Anderson. "They either want to think we’re madly in love
or hating each other. But it’s neither of those things. It’s
magical and difficult, and wondrous and painful, and frustrating
and joyous, as any intense, intimate relationship is."
- "The whole experience from beginning to end surpassed any
of my expectations. ... I learned so much," said the first-time
director. Series co-star David Duchovny has only a limited role
in the story, but Anderson says that was a gift, not a slight.
"I know for myself how important time is, and time away from
work, and it was an opportunity for me to give him that," she
said.
- RUBY: I was wondering, what's your off-screen relationship
with Mr. Duchovny is like, in comparison to that of Mulder and
Scully?
GA: Um, we have sex once a day, um, we eat off each other's
feet . . . no. Um, let's see. What is our relationship like?
We're friends. We don't usually socialize that much together.
On the week-ends, we generally separate and do our own thing.
But it's good. It's a good, down-to-earth, platonic relationship.
- "I couldn't care less about the rumours that we don't get
along. Whether what is out there is truth or fiction, there's
nothing that can be done or said. Some absurd and some accurate
things have been said about our relationship. I don't think
anybody could understand it. It's complicated, ever-changing.
Our relationship is good. We basically show up on the set and
work."
- First impression of David Duchovny: "Very nice, very handsome,
very smart, very charming. He was very good and attentive, and
worked well on the scenes that we read together during the audition."
- For the record, Anderson says she and Duchovny get along
really well. "It's remarkable what ends up on screen,''
she says. "It's just a consistently strong relationship.
It's just constant tension and it's great.''
- "They either want to think we’re madly in love or hating each
other. But it’s neither of those things. It’s magical and difficult,
and wondrous and painful, and frustrating and joyous, as any
intense, intimate relationship is."
- "I've only seen David a handful of times since the beginning
of the season," Anderson notes. "There are about six episodes
that he's involved in now that we're reaching the end of the
year, but it's odd. I mean, it's like I've taken on a lover
in a sense; there's another man living in the house, you know
what I mean? We haven't had a lot of experience where it's the
three of us, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that it's a little
awkward. But," she adds with a coy smile, "we're all adults."
