- "We have a relationship that is completely odd and fabricated.
We've been thrown together, two people who don't know each other,
and we've been forced to spend more time together than married
people do. So you can't describe our relationship as 'like' or
'dislike.'" (Hall, Carla. "A Man and His 'X'." Los Angeles
Times 26 Oct. 1997)
- "I don't socialize with Gillian, just because we're working
together all the time, but we get along. We have our moments.
Sometimes we all just show up and go, 'I'd rather be anywhere
else but here, and I'm going to make you suffer for it.' But then
at other times I'll look at Gillian and think, 'She's the only
one that really knows what I'm going through, and I'm the only
one that knows what she's going through.' So there's a real bond
there and at this point, four years into the show. Ultimately,
we're all just trying to make it the best show we can. If we keep
that common goal in mind, we all can forgive a lot." (Lambert,
Sara. "I Want to Believe." Cult Times Aug. 1997: 28-35)

- On reports of trepidation about casting Gillian Anderson:
"I don't think that's necessarily true. They say that, but it's
not really true. Chris Carter had many things in mind, and Gillian
Anderson is a pretty woman. I don't know what the problem is there.
It's not like she's a hideous cow. I don't think either character
was defined. And when people talk about what they were looking
for, it's usually nitwit studio heads who say, 'Let's put a girl
with big tits in here or a guy with long hair there.' The same
people who said that about Gillian also had things to say about
me, but Chris Carter knew he was going to fight for who he wanted,
and he did." (Unreich, Rachelle. "David Duchovny." CLEO May
1996)
- More about Gillian Anderson: "[W]e don't hang out. We are very
wary of the fact that any moment the other can turn into a psychotic
human being because of the demands that are put on us, the sixteen-hour
days. So I know when she is tired and irritable, and she knows
the same about me. We have a great respect for thefine line the
other is walking all the time." (Nickson, Chris. The X-Factor:
The Unauthorized Biography of X-Files Superstar David Duchovny,
p. 141, 1996)
Miscellaneous
- Where you aware of Fox's reluctance to casting Gillian?
That's overblown. You look at Gillian, and she's a beautiful woman.
And how often do you see Scully in a bathing suit? Gillian's not
6 feet tall and doesn't have what's-her-face's tits, but she's
got as nice face as any of them.
- From someone in Boston: Mulder and Scully have a difficult
enough relationship to define on camera. How much truth is brought
to the reputed complexity of your off-screen relationship with
Gillian? The chemistry seems to be there, but rumors of discontentment
plague you two. How much truth do these hold?
Duchovny: "I think [our relationship] is one of those ones that's
so kind of longstanding and so many things are unspoken. It's
almost familial in that way. I'm a firm believer that you recreate
your family situations at work. She's a combination of a few people.
I won't say who. But it's complicated."
- And what about you and Gillian? For years, there have been
rumors that the two of you don't like each other.
It's always been fine. We're just not Mulder and Scully. We're
not going to lay our lives down for each other, yet we do like
each other.
- Despite what the tabloids like to report as "difficulty on
the set" between Duchovny and Anderson, he says they have a "comfortable
working relationship" and believes that viewers and journalists
are fascinated with them because of the complicated relationship
they’ve had on-screen. "We’ve worked together closely for seven
years," he says. "There’s definitely a friendship."
- Howard Stern: Are you.. Now, you don't like Gillian Anderson,
the woman you work with...
David Duchovny: I do!
Howard Stern: No, you have made statements in the past
David Duchovny: I have never
Howard Stern: And your relationship with her is somewhat
strained
Robin: Strained? Or strange?
Howard Stern: Strained. Let me read it to you
David Duchovny: No, it's not
Howard Stern: "Our relationship is odd. It's completely
fabricated. When work is over. She is the last person I want to
see"
David Duchovny: That not only extends to her, but
when work is over, I don't want to see anyone from work.
Howard Stern: What about her contract?
David Duchovny: Do you and Robin socialize after
the show?
Howard Stern: Very rarely
David Duchovny: I'm sorry
Howard Stern: I would like to see her, she doesn't want
to see me. So, you are telling me that you do like Gillian Anderson.
David Duchovny: I do like Gillian Anderson.
- Q: There is a certain chemistry between Mulder and
Scully that we're led to believe doesn't exist between Duchovny
and Anderson.
DD: Well, that's just something we do, because we want
people to think we're really good actors.
Q: She does it really well, though. She kind of alluded to
the fact that you guys didn't get along. DD: You know,
you have a working relationship with somebody that, over a period
of time, gets strained. We've had five years together, very closely
working together. I can't psychoanalyze Gillian, but I would say,
she just wants people to know that she's a person with her own
feelings, and that's one way for her to say that I'm more than
Scully. Her not wanting to comment on that is like saying, "I
have a life going on here that's more than Scully, or is more
than the show and I want to be taken seriously."
- "Gillian has beautiful eyes," Duchovny says. "Her eyes anchor
me to the scene. They're big and they're blue and they're wet.
And the top of her nose goes up and down when she talks. Her nose
is a good actor."
- Q: Do you get
along well with Gillian Anderson?
DD: Yes!! Isn't that visible?? ;-)
Q: With whom do you get along best on the X-Files
set?
DD: Gillian most likely; we spend a lot of time together...
